OWGS Vs. Notts Golf Club, Hollinwell
Summer finally arrived in the midlands to greet a select band of OWGS golfers to Hollinwell on Saturday, and the second match against the club provided a course in immaculate condition, company all in good form, and a result which went someway to avenging the golf lesson provided to us back in November.
OWGS was led out by the powerful combination of Twiney & Lewis, and the oppositions query as to which one was the scratch man after the first drives provided Twiney with much pleasure. A hard fought match ensued, with Tim showing his class and the result of a summer spent on the course, and Twiney dove tailing in well, and provided a 2&1 victory against the club captain too. The second match featured the equally powerful Holt, accompanied by the equally adept dovetailing of the Captain, fortunately by the time an early start from London caught up with Holt, the Captain was able to step in to lead going down 18. A five was considered good for a win by our intrepid duo, making good use of the deep rough to achieve that, sadly our oppo holed a 20 foot putt for the 4 which halved the match. The final game of Hough & Whittington fought hard to stay in touch with an unusually consistent oppo, their words not mine, and did well to take the match down 17.

1 _ each was perfect preparation for Pimms on the lawn and an excellent convivial lunch. We set out for our afternoon 9 holes singles in good spirits. One man down following Holts three line whip for dinner, we recruited the Pro to assist our afternoon efforts, who brought in our first point, equalled by their club captain overcoming Lewis 1 up, revenge for the morning match.Ê Match 3 saw a gentlemanly half between Whittington, and the less consistent match captain, played in what looked from behind in very friendly manner, and Twiney completed a successful day with a further point running out comfortable 3 & 2. So much depended on the Captain and Hough to secure victory with the match balanced 4 to 3 in OWGS favour. Despite seeing little of the short stuff off the tee the captain managed to secure another point 2&1, and HoughÕs hard fought match, including a text book birdie at the par 5 third, ended successfully 1 up.

So in the end a good victory, a very enjoyable day on a great course with great company and a match that we hope will become a regular fixture over the coming years. For those who donÕt know Notts GC it is one of the very best inland courses in the UK and worth playing once, so keep your eyes open for next yearÕs date.
