OWs v Old Malvernians

Match report from yesterday’s match at the Berkshire.

On a rather damp and dreary day at the Berkshire, the Old Wykehamists’ finest lined up against an Old Malvernian team including both the Dwarf (Peter Mathieson – past President of the Berkshire) and the Gorilla (Richard Thompson). In the event the rain was fairly continuous, but not too hard, and the wind did not get up too much, so it was rather more enjoyable than anticipated.

In the top match Simon Hardie (a new signing, playing his first OW match off 6 at Liphook) together with old hand David Ham failed to overcome the wiles of the Dwarf and David Dent, and went down 5 and 3.

I paired up with Christopher Green in the second match against the opposing Captain, Rob Mason, and the Gorilla. We made the mistake of winning the first two holes, which only served to get the Gorilla motivated, and in spite of my nearly holing my tee shot at the 7th, which could have been a bit expensive, we lost 2 and 1 – the Gorilla managed to get on to the 14th (on the Red) in 2 even against the wind!

Michael Woodward and David Parkinson lost 2 down to Chris Cudahy and Duncan Christie Miller, while Dayrell McArthur and Cameron Reeves saved the OW’s blushes by halving with Jerry Hughes and Chris Halliwell.

Lunch on the terrace under the shelter of the large marquee was very enjoyable, if not as fulfilling as the normal roast choice in the dining room.

The OMs have already arranged next year’s fixture for Friday 8 October.

Best regards,

Nyren
